<<Why is CSCO acting sluggish lately???>>
It was up 15 points in about 6 or 7 trading days. Still up about 17 points for the year. You call that sluggish? It used to be that a 10-15% gain over a year was considered excellent! That is, before so many of the self proclaimed "long term" investors we see on this thread ever bought a single share!

Another giant coming in to compete with CSCO.

Intel said the acquisition is aimed at rapidly expanding its networking product line with Shiva's remote access and virtual private networking products for small to medium businesses, corporate campuses and branch offices.

Virtual private networking technology uses the Internet to create secure network connections between multiple local area networks, or LANs, separated by long distances, for the cost of a local dial-up Internet connection.

--------------------
IMO, CSCO is going to be in pretty tough times from now.
There are a lot more direct competitors now compared to a yr or two ago. Before there were no single vendor that would think of going into Router business; now there are about ten startup companies doing GigaBit and TeraBit Switch Routers for SPs market. Why? one reason is that Router technology today has move away from the Multi-Protocol Router technology to JUST IP only technology. This paves the way to very quickly and effectively compete with CSCO because these startups now only need to do IP stuff very good in both software as well as ASIC.

Summary of some competitions-

In the Enterprise area: the startups + 3COM, CS and XYLN

In the SPs area: the startups + LU PacketStar IP Router + NT BAY

Now in the RAC area: not just ASND, and LU but now the giant INTC. Intel with its mkt strength and manufacturing advantage will be able to expand the SHVA products very well. Note that SHVA latest products are in fact quite good.
