Look fellas, it's awfully difficult to understand these numbers because of the magnitude of the writeoffs due to the spate of acquisitions. Some of them were made using pooling of interests, and others were made using purchasing method accounting. It will take several quarters with no additional acquisition activity in order to derive any meaningful picture from what we see.

But I have a feeling that there is no respite in sight, nor do I feel that there necessarily ought to be one. NETA is the emerging gorilla, and it needs lots of bananas in order to grow into King Kong. There is probably a year or so of breathing room because of DOJ's interest in Mr. Softie, so this may be the time to Microsoft proof the company by growing to the size that gives it staying power.

But then again, maybe not.
