I pretty much agree with what you're saying. If you're going to show a retrospective, show everything. However, if there are pornographic elements I see no reason why they couldn't be exhibited separately with some restrictions (like kids going into an R rated movie).

I think it's up to the parent to be informed about what they're taking their kids to, I mean if it's a Maplethorpe or Haring exhibition, you might not wish to bring the kids along. I'm sure that there were pieces in the Winslow Homer exhibition when it was at the Met in NY that might have offended some. For example, there was an exquisite painting of "slave women" that was breathtaking in it's beauty, but I could imagine that some blacks might have taken offense at the painting.
