i stick with a certain group of stocks for day trading....i buy an average of 1000 shares and the prices are from 10 to 100$....i average 1/2 per trade but alot of the time i will catch a point+.....i average 3 to 20 trades a day and will re-trade the same stock several time a day......i rarely buy anything within the first 10 minutes unless i know for sure the stock is taking off.

i also find that when you trade the same stocks over and over again you get a real good feel of how they move throughout the day.....when i a stock runs it's course i will look to replace it.

here a few of my day traders:
dell
xcit
asnd
osi
ericy

Daniel, you are better going for the 1/8 or 1/4 point moves on a stock, because they are more likely to happen quicker, so you can certainly day trade more easily. You can also use less volatile stocks that way.
