President Clinton, academia calls:

Students buy grades with bribes, sex

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Some Thai university students have sex with
lecturers, pay them bribes and throw them parties to secure better grades,
a poll by a state-run educational institute found.

Tuesday's Bangkok Post said the survey by the Suan Dusit Rajabhat
Institute found such practices were most common at private colleges, but
also occurred at some state universities and at the institute's own
campuses.

The paper said 151 of 900 students questioned in the poll had witnessed
grade buying. The poll found lecturers were paid off, bought gifts or
provided with sexual favors by students who wanted to avoid submitting
reports.

''Some students agree to throw birthday parties for teachers, sponsor
trips or even let teachers sexually harass them,'' the report quoted pollster
Sukhum Chaloeysap as saying.
