If you haven't noticed, ST, analysts tend to publish news and analysis about a week after it's old news (though I'm sure they use the information for the benefit of themselves, and their clients). Sadly, industry newsletters, articles, and other analysis usually lags far public forums (like S.I), which, in turn, lag the real news by 2-3 days.

I guess that's why we see major stock movements without any apparent cause... There are many people in the industry in the know, and they're not posting what they know.

I wonder what other surprises 3dfx has in store that others (like CREAF) know about, that we don't :)

Well, that explains all the positioning...

It would appear that nVidia, 3dfx, Number Nine, and S3 are up for grabs. Matrox, 3dlabs, and ATI are already vertically integrated. (I say nVidia because it looks like an IPO is out of the question but they are still hurting for cash.) SGI looks like they have a firm grasp on Number Nine so far.

The main issue is that independent graphics board makers are in danger of having no product to sell. Imagine a case where nVidia pairs with STB and 3dfx pairs with Creative. What video cards would Diamond sell? STB is already running into problems because of 3dlabs vertical integration.

The graphics industry is playing high stakes musical chairs. So who will be left standing when the music stops?
