What I don't understand is why not simply leave them in other assets until they pay
off, why take charge now?. I suppose they want a totally clean balance sheet with
only positive surprises. I don't have any problem with it as long as they are
becoming a major part of the future public network.

Bindusagar,

As I already stated, Ashby is bagging earnings for future quarters. In reality, Ascend blew past analysts' expectations. They could have booked the $8.7M in capital financing directly to the bottom line for an extra $0.04/share! They also could have booked some of the ATM revenue that they instead defered into October. I think Ascend could have legitimately reported $.40/share this quarter if they wanted to!

It's all accounting hoccus-pocus, and Ashby is being conservative because he knows how the street works, which is good. Ascend has been stung in the past, they are taking the safe road this time. Better to have a steady rise in earnings and stock price than to be up and down every other quarter. It feels good to me that Ascend started the first day of Q4 with perhaps $0.08/share in earnings.

By listening the CC replay, I understand that the revert merger gain
($18 mil) is from previous CSCC acquisition. This is a one time gain,
and it will not happen again. By offsetting this one time gain, they
come up with those cost indicated in your post which caused some
discussion.

One thing I noticed in the CC was that no single analyst congratulate
ASND with their latest earning. It was not a good sign. I guess every
one is struggled with this one time gain and those write offs. I think
we may have some short term volatility ahead.

Thank you for answering my confusion.

Cheers!
Mike
