The challenge for CPU designers is to make a CPU core that provides superior performance before L2 cache is added . K6 + K7 are such designs IMHO

During the early 1990's, the Power PC, Sparc, Mips, Intel, etc. design teams put a huge amount of effort into architectural elegance. In contrast, the Alpha design team stuck with a very simple design and chose instead to concentrate on megahertz and cache size. Who won the performance battle?
