What is to prevent Dell from going to IBM for an OS, browser and
Spreadsheet/word processor product?

but there is something that is indeed preventing Dell from going to a company X for the OS, to another company Y for a word-processor, and to yet another company Z for the browser.

And that is what the DOJ is addressing right now...

Dipy.

I would say the DOJ has a case only if if can prove that Msft said it would pull all its business from Dell if Dell were to secure a second source for those products. Securing a 2nd source is a business practice that all should do and attempting to prevent it should be met with harsh penalties. So far, all I have read is people want to tell Msft what they can sell or give away with their OS and the only reason they take issue is Msft wants to give more bang for the buck where someone else once made money selling that feature. Jeepers, memory makers used to get "Jacksons per magabyte" whereas today they get "Washingtons per 64Meg" and the whole reason for this is someone else pushed the envelope giving the consumer more for less.

One of the battles in the past was Msft forbid people to put up Netscape automatically in the opening Windows screen. I always wondered what was to prevent Dell from making their own OS screen to run over that of Msft.... This is probably a good issue for the suit to really learned what was happening. I can understand that if I buy a Sony TV that Sony would not want to be told to have the TV startup with a picture of a JVC VCR on the screen.
