MO's opened up almost one from yesterday's close of 47 7/8. Now trading up at 48 3/8. Lot's of optimism out on the street today for the market as a whole. Hopefully MO will participate. I expect some pop today on our opening arguments in the Engle farce. I am very curious to see the media's coverage of the defense's opening argument, and also curious to hear how MO et al plan on defending themselves from that ridiculous case.

Two snippets from Bloomberg

From my Bloomberg terminal -

"Throughout their worldwide business, you not only have the economies contracting in some significant markets, but also currency issues," said Goldman Sachs & Co. analyst Marc Cohen.

He is taking an optimistic view, saying Philip Morris' ability to show solid profit gains in such an environment is an indication of strength rather than a signal of trouble ahead. In fact, Cohen increased his 1999 earnings target to $3.50 a share from $3.45 in light of the company's third quarter performance.
