To Jim: Thanks. The WLL story from the CDG raises the question of what part of "Eastern Europe" permits CDMAOne WLL now. Only Russia, Poland and the Ukraine are cited specifically but how about other "Eastern European" countries? Also curious if since GSM is by definition about "mobile", is there a possible loophole for CDMAOne WLL - which is by definition "fixed" wireless anywhere else in Europe? Curious. Chaz

Jim, this WLL report is obviously a huge mistake. Rajala knows that WLL is a waste of time, no cheaper than mobile and poor people don't care about the extra cost of mobile. Rajala - you should apply for a consultancy to save all the WLL installers from a financial blunder of massive proportions.

But, I can confirm he is right about digging trenches in preference to wireless capital costs. Digging trenches is cheap in India where people struggle for a living. WLL analysis should include local trench costs, not USA trench costs, which I'm sure they are capable of figuring out. I've seen people in India breaking rocks up with hammers to build roads. They carry the stones to their placement position in the new road. No jaw crushers, 50 Tonne trucks, heavy civil engineering equipment. These are hand built roads. Women sweeping dirt roads with brushes made from local flora. These are seriously poor people. Who will choose the cheapest phone service they can get which does the job they want done. WLL handsets will remain cheaper than mobile for quite a while yet. Maybe forever since they don't need a battery, they don't have the spectrum management demands etc.

When India sees what a bit of foreign capital can do - they need only check out Bangalore, they might start to forget the great and glorious independence from the British which has served them so poorly economically. They chucked out the British, but kept the socialist ideas from Britain. They kept English language too, but are in the process of chucking that out - which isn't going to do anything for their economic position. Young people are a bit angry that they get conned into learning local dialects, which are useless for getting them good paying jobs.

Now that the USA senate has put the kibosh on more visas for electronics engineers, QUALCOMM will have to set up reseach centres in Bangalore and China and train rock breakers to become electronics whizzes.
