LSI Logic Ships Six Millionth QPSK Demodulator
Satellite Receiver

LSI Logic Rapidly Attains Market and Technical Leadership in Highly-Integrated Digital
Demodulators for Direct Broadcast Satellite Set-Top Boxes

MILPITAS, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- LSI Logic Corporation (NYSE: LSI - news) today announced that it has sold
more than six million QPSK demodulator ICs for consumer Direct Broadcast via Satellite (DBS) set-top box receivers. LSI
Logic, with its Integra(R) set-top box architecture, is a leading supplier to set-top box manufacturers in North America, Europe
and Asia and estimates that its current share of the QPSK demodulator market is approximately 50%.

The highly-integrated family of CMOS ICs is designed to convert the QPSK-encoded signals output by an analog tuner to
digital MPEG transport data. Starting with the L64706 demodulator, LSI Logic has established a standard for performance
and feature integration that is unmatched in the Direct Broadcast Satellite industry. The latest version, the L64724, delivers the
widest range of data rates and offers the fastest channel acquisition rates of any QPSK-demodulator available. A dedicated
micro-controller enables faster tuning during channel changes, providing direct benefits to consumers. For users of a set-top
box using LSI Integra devices, channel changes are imperceptible.

''We are extremely pleased to reach such a significant milestone with our Direct Broadcast Satellite set-top box components,''
said Simon Dolan, vice president of consumer product marketing, LSI Logic. ''The key to our success is that each successive
product in this family has provided higher integration, lower cost, and better performance. This, in turn, has enabled set-top box
manufacturers such as Hughes, Philips, Thomson, Nokia, and EchoStar to spur the growth of the entire industry by delivering
high-value consumer entertainment products.''

''While other companies are chasing just MPEG decoding, which has become a commodity, LSI Logic has been investing in a
longer-term strategy that looks at the entire set-top box problem,'' said Gerry Kaufhold, Principal Analyst for Digital Television
with the Cahners In-Stat Group. ''LSI Logic's groundbreaking line of QPSK receivers proves that the strategy works,
especially upon the announcement of the six millionth part being shipped.''

''Given LSI Logic's leading QPSK technology, combined with its MPEG-2 decoders and transport demuliplexors, and the fact
that it is a MIPS licensee, the company is well positioned to remain at the forefront of system-on-a chip solutions for set-top
boxes.''

L64724 Single-Chip Satellite Receiver

LSI Logic's L64724 satellite receiver is a single-chip all digital implementation of a QPSK/BPSK demodulator and a
concatenated FEC decoder. The L64724 has been designed specifically to address the needs of the DBS market and is fully
compliant with the European DVB and the DSS standards. It is capable of continuously operating at rates from one to 90
MBits/sec. The L64724 is designed to achieve maximum flexibility and integration at a minimum cost. The part contains dual
6-bit A/D's and a simple uC, which controls all acquisition and tracking functions.

The L65724 satellite receiver, along with the L64108 MIPS-based transport demultiplexor and the L64105 MPEG source
decoder, provide the hardware components of the complete LSI Logic Integra satellite set-top box solution. Coupled with
powerful software and a selection of development platforms and manufacturing kits, the Integra architecture offers a
comprehensive platform to develop set-top box solutions supporting a range of application and performance targets.

Thanks for putting those press releases on the "news only" thread but why clutter up the main thread with long and detailed items and no personal comment? Everybody interested in LSI gets those releases just as fast as you from multiple news sources.
