As I recall, it wasn't much of a duel - Nixon won the greatest victory of that election year. Even the Dems knew Douglas was hopeless and abandoned her in large measure.

(She was also very pretty, but not the great beauty with intellect that Clare Booth Luce was. Luce represented my district in the House).
