Ascend CEO Says Wall St. 'Does Not Understand' Write-Down

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Ascend Communications Inc.'s (ASND) Chief Executive
Mory Ejabat said "Wall Street does not understand" its write-down for loans to
customers. The chief executive and president told CNBC Tuesday that the company was
continuing accounting practices it had practiced "since 1993."

As reported, Ascend shares fell 11% Tuesday on concerns over an $8.7 million
write-down in the third quarter.

The chief executive explained that when Ascend provides financing for customers, it
writes the money off. "All financing we have is written off," Ejabat emphasized. Only
when customers pay the bills for the financing does the company record the money,
Ejabat said.

Separately, Ejabat said the company is not in "active discussions" with any company
regarding a takeover. "There has not been an offer for Ascend, but if an offer comes, we'll
take it to the board," Ejabat said.

Still seeing big blocks being bought. Yet to see blocks being sold. I think all those less informed and queasy traders sold off before the open. Investors stepped in this morning looking at their future. Paul Johnson said their competition looks fierce going forward. Huh ?! Wasnt darling Cisco a competition all this while ? If it wasnt then why does everyone think that Cisco is a major WAN vendor ? If it isnt then it is sporting a high PE only due to its Enterprise presence, which is a declining market sector ??
How contradictory can these anal-cysts get ? They think investors have no memory and brains to rationalize ?

Thoroughly confused trying to make sense of their rationale behind buying stock of these companies. But I get it, there is no sense its just momentum as always. The reports are just to justify their jobs when it comes time analyze it is "Uhhhh buy Cisco. Its the leader, great mangement, entering telecom market (no major evidence yet) blah blah blah". Whereas it should be " I dont know crap. So just buy the company whose CEO you can comprehend and who feeds you exactly what you want to hear so you dont have to think and analyze. Forget the fact their products are behind, they have lost most deals and the only market going forward is international where they lost partners to resell."
The last anal-cyst on the CC just cracked me up. He asked the questions just for the heck of it since he had to. "Are your ATM products interoperable with DWDM equipment?" he asked. Its wide knowledge for the last 6 months that Pirelli, Lucent and Ciena DWDM products were capable of being interfaced to the GX550 and CBX500. There was a release from the company for that for crying out loud.
