Microsoft's Bill Neukom Makes Statement on Courthouse Steps

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement from Bill Neukom of Microsoft:

"Good morning. Yesterday, the government tried to tell its side of a story. Starting today, for the
rest of the trial, Microsoft will set this record straight.

"Yesterday was about a lot of rhetoric, a lot of half truths, and even some name calling. Today, we
begin a search for the truth and the development of the facts in this case.

"Today, we begin the process of exposing essentially a work of fiction that's been written jointly by
Netscape and the antitrust division.

"The government is relying, as you heard yesterday, on a patchwork of e-mail snippets and
out-of-context information to misrepresent the facts that are pertinent to this case and to attack
what is plainly one of this country's most innovative companies.

"In the days ahead, we will show that the Government's case is a groundless exercise, designed to
benefit just a handful of Microsoft's competitors, who do not compete with us on the merits of their
technology. This is not a case designed or that will accomplish any benefits for consumers.

"We will show that Microsoft built Internet Explorer technologies into our operating system in order
to benefit our consumers and that that integration has benefited our consumers, the end users of
PCs, and the independent software vendors who are critical to PC software industry.

"We will show that none of Microsoft's actions has in any way foreclosed Netscape's ability to
distribute in its technology in the market. Netscape's problem is not distribution -- Netscape's
problem is technology.

"And finally, we will show that Microsoft competes vigorously, but always fairly, and that Microsoft's
innovations and competition in the industry has benefited consumers, software developers and the
entire economy." SOURCE Microsoft Corporation
