SVCD, the first day of sales.................................. It is said that no hot sale in AV product market. Now VCD sales begin to slump after several years of success. But, don¡¯t lose your heart, its supreme version is coming.... SVCD is making a good start ( reported on Sept. 15th¡¶ Liberation Daily ¡· by Ma hailin ): enteOn Sept 5th, the 14 electronics enterprises of Jiangsu Shinco ., Shanghai Broadcast & Film, Nanjing Panda and Shenzhen Skyworth, etc. announced together in Hilton Hotel: SVCD, the upgrading product of VCD laser disk player ( that is: supreming VCD ) is warmly welcomed by all large department stores and sales agents on its first day into the market. The following day was just Sunday and people on shopping were immediately attracted by its clarity on seeing this new AV product. On this very day, 30 SVCD were sold in each of the five department stores of Shanghai No. 1 Department Store, New World Department Store, Hualian Department Store, Times Department and Caoyang Department Store. A gentleman from Shinco Co. said that they were gratified at SVCD¡¯s success on its first day to public despite no advertisements had been made. He said that altogether 4300 SVCD had been sold till the day before. enteWhat is the superiority of ¡° Supreming VCD¡±? It lies mainly in its high definition . The day before yesterday in the evening at No. 1 Department Store¡¯s Shinco products showing counter, crowds of people were drawn towards the counter to see on spot showing of SVCD. People were talking warmly while watching SVCD showing. Some said SVCD¡¯s picture was indeed more vivid than that of VCD, perhaps it would be better to see films like <Titanic> on SVCD than on VCD which is not quite fit for big films. Some said that newly-developed SVCD is certainly technically advanced than VCD, so it will be the first choice for people. enteThen shop assistance explained, since video coding of SVCD adopts the same MPEG 2 compression technique as that of DVD, vertical definition was greatly increased by two times and horizontal definition increased to a level of 350 lines which would bring the performance of analog TV into full play. Also, SVCD has four sound tracks and consequently has a better stereo effect than VCD¡¯s two sound tracks has. Furthermore, to the satisfaction of people, it has the advantage of good quality and reasonable price, and this new Shinco three disk SVCD is only priced at 1500 yuan with 5 domestic film SVCD disks presented freely. entePeople got more interested in SVCD. A gentleman named Mr. Zhu asked, ¡° is it possible to play VCD disk on SVCD machine ? let¡¯s have a look at it.¡± The shop assistant seemed ready for that, she put a VCD disk on SVCD machine and then pressed the key, words like ¡°VCD disk, 250 lines definition¡± appeared on the screen. After a while, seeing VCD disk was playing well on SVCD machine, she changed it back to SVCD disk, ¡°350 lines of definition¡± was shown on screen at the same time. enteIt is said that the newly-built Shinco Audio & Video Co. has bought SVCD copyright of 500 Chinese films and many foreign films to make publishing of SVCD disk in large quantity possible. By the end of the year, Shinco Co. will set up more than 5000 chain shops in large and medium sized cities throughout the country specially for SVCD disk promotion. The estimated price is about 45 ¨C50 yuan per set. enteThe only difference between SVCD and VCD on appearance is : for a 90 minutes feature film, it needs 3 SVCD disks to load while for VCD disk, two is enough. The reason is : in order to improve its definition, SVCD needs more ¡°groves¡± to store information. Completely convinced, Mr Zhu bought a SVCD merrily. enteOf course, people¡¯s choice is diversified. After spending half an hour in front of the Shinco products counters in No. 1 Department Store and New World Department Store, the reporter noticed different responses from customers. Members of a family, learning that SVCD machine will not be compatible with DVD disk after consulting the promotion worker, they said they would rather buy DVD instead. Indeed, an ever-changing requirement of the customers is just an impetus to stimulate enterprises to work hard unceasingly and go over the old and bring forth new to the market to meet the demands of the people better.

It may be the most significant innovation in television since color TV. But until broadcasters provide breathtaking new programming and couch potatoes start snapping up the expensive new sets -- years from now, perhaps -- there's precious little money to be made. In fact, your best play might be the companies that will supply HDTV equipment to TV stations. The Federal Communications Commission has mandated that stations in the top 10 markets begin digital broadcasts by next May, which means they have little choice but to ante up for the necessary high-tech gear. That could provide a revenue bump for Lucent Technologies (LU), the telecommunications equipment giant spun out of AT&T Corp. (T) two years ago. It controls 50% of the market in digital "encoders," which are the boxes stations use to prepare an analog signal for a digital format, says Lucent spokesperson Chris Pfaff. Hi Bob, come on, give me a break... I guess that the "great news" is the quarterly result now being released, a couple of cts in the black as opposed to a few more cts in the red with severe inside-leaks prior to this "sensational" release. "Creative (Wall Street) marketing" some call it, but disgusting it is! The Street always gets even later.
