Rather than variability in the ore pile, the erratic results could be caused by erratic processing at the mill. I tend to think this is the case because accurate and systematic records were not kept and there was, I believe, a certain amount of cook book by the seat of the pants approach---something like my grandmother who, when asked for her recipe, would say a little of this and a little of that. McKays approach will be different with accurate record keeping which should in time, unveil the procedures necessary for production and for developing increasing rates of return.

But you should ask headquarters to provide an explanation and not accept my speculation.
