-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CMG sold 700,100 Lycos shares Reuters Story - October 20, 1998 18:11 WASHINGTON, Oct 20 (Reuters) - CMG Information Services Inc, one of the world's largest Internet investment and operating companies, sold 700,100 common shares of Internet search engine Lycos Inc, a recent Securities and Exchange Commission filing said. CMG, based in Andover, Mass., disposed of the shares from June 17-July 16, making over $47 million, the SEC document known as a Form 144 said. CMG sold 490,000 shares from June 17-July 16 via Dain Rauscher and 210,100 shares from June 17-July 15 via Prudential, the filing said. A spokeswoman for CMG, which wholly or partially owns about 28 Internet companies, characterized the sale as simply a return on its investment and "there's no reflection on Lycos other than it's purely an investment for us." CMG had held a 23 percent stake in Lycos, which has about 37 million shares outstanding. She said that Lycos is one the companies that CMG owns stock in through their ventures arm, which CMG uses to make minority investments in other companies. "These companies that we own stock in through our ventures Group Cos., at some point in time we will be liquidating those investments .... We act like a venture capital company," she added. Those companies include Web site provider GeoCities , in which CMG has a 29 percent stake.
