Craig,

My point precisely. I was being a bit "tongue in cheek"
as your comments reflect my experiences. Y2K can be
tackled one of two ways: 1) fix applications written in
Cobol; or, 2) fix the data itself. The big database folks
like Oracle are betting on #2. Around 1994, I started making
some investments in #1 with hotshot companies like Intersolv
only to find out this never caught fire. Now, with time
running out, fixing data seems to be the only game in town
due to the shortages of Cobol programmers.

Lots of companies threw up their hands a long time ago
and outsourced everything to the experts. This is why
Anderson Consulting, EDS, and the like have discovered
boom times. They are buying storage solutions backed
by new database software.
