Tokyo Nikkei jumps above important 14,000 level

TOKYO, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei average jumped above the psychologically significant 14,000 point level on Wednesday morning.

It was the first time the index had been above 14,000 since September 28.

As of 0015 GMT, the Nikkei 225 average was up 399.22 points or 2.89 percent at 14,207.27. Nikkei December futures climbed 380 points to 14,290.

The rally was backed by the yen's stability against the dollar and recent gains in Wall Street stocks, which mitigated fears of a global economic crisis, as well as relief that Japan may have avoided a financial meltdown, traders said.

''The investment environment surrounding the Tokyo market is getting better now,'' said Yutaka Miura, a market analyst at New Japan Securities Co Ltd.
