Pigboy,

<<Back to the software side, how close of competitors are CA and VRTS? Is one far ahead?>>

Unfortunately, I'm not very familiar with Veritas at all. I'm much more familiar with Seagate Software, who Veritas just agreed to buy. Seagate bought Arcada a while back, and I have been a Backup Exec (originally an Arcada product) user for a long time. On the CA side of the coin, I am familiar with them only through their acquisition trail They bought Cheyenne, who purchased the Colorado Backup software line from HP, who bought out Colorado Memory Systems. I sell and support the Colorado products.

It APPEARS as if both companies are positioning themselves as cross-platform, enterprise-capable software companies, with Veritas concentrating on the SAN and backup applications. I believe CA has a broader overall product offering, but the acquisition of Seagate Software should certainly help Veritas in the NT and NetWare areas.
