Ericsson lands another D-AMPS order in Brazil

Ericsson has signed a major contract with Telet S.A. of Brazil for the
construction of a D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA) digital wireless network covering the
State of Rio Grande do Sul. The contract is valued at USD 140 million (SEK
1,090 million) over a three year period.

Ericsson now has a 50% share of the B-Band new wireless operators' market in
Brazil. This current order covers Area 6 of the B-Band license areas. Eight
out of nine network operators in the B-Band areas, that have awarded
contracts, have selected to use the TDMA technology to provide the latest
digital services available.

Telet plans to begin commercial service in the city of Porto Alegre in January
1999. Telet S.A. is a consortium formed by Telesystem International Wireless
and Bell Canada International, both Canada based companies, plus Citybank
International, and a group of 11 large Brazilian pension funds and financial
institutions.

There are nearly 90 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS networks worldwide.
D-AMPS was the first technology to be commercially available as a dual-band
(800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog/digital) technology. Nearly 16 million
subscribers are already using D-AMPS digital services.

Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with
communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with
the freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140
countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network
operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.

EU Denies Blocking U.S. Mobile Phone Suppliers

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Commission rejected complaints on Tuesday that it was trying to exclude U.S.
suppliers from Europe's mobile phone market, saying it only wanted to ensure consumers could use their equipment across
Europe.

''We say we want compatible solutions, not necessarily the same system all over Europe,'' said Jochen Kubosch, spokesman
for Telecommunications Commissioner Martin Bangemann.

U.S. Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky said in Brussels on Monday she was concerned that the European Union was
pushing ''exclusionary'' technical standards in the race to develop the next generation of mobile communications technology.

The EU, keen to see its manufacturers stay in the lead, has been promoting efforts to develop a common European standard
that could also be considered as a world standard.

The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) has backed a technology developed by European firms including
Nordic manufacturers Nokia and Ericsson.

''ETSI is completely independent and industry-led,'' Kubosch said, adding that ETSI's membership included some U.S.
companies that actively supported its standard.

He said the EU has drafted legislation that aims to ensure that the 15 EU countries license mobile systems that allow for
''roaming'' -- the ability to use phones when moving across national borders. But he said it was not ''exclusive''.

However, U.S. high-technology Qualcomm Inc (QCOM - news), has complained that the ETSI standard is incompatible with
a competing standard that it supports -- and has refused to license key technologies needed to get it off the ground.

Qualcomm has expressed concern about language in the EU legislation, which aims to coordinate the introduction of the new
mobile systems across Europe, that is says favor ETSI standards.

Any thoughts on Thursday's earnings release? What are analysts looking for? What are the whisper numbers? What do you think the stock will do tomorrow after earnings release. Currently holding several hundred shares. I'd be interested in the short term and long term outlook on the stock!
