A large portion of the population "here" has absolutely no conceptual idea of what you mean by this:

"where up to 80M people have slipped below the poverty line, life is becoming increasingly cheap...."

They will probably be thinking you mean something on the order of going out to eat less often, or taking fewer vacations next year.

I would include myself in this unenlightened category had I not chanced to have traveled in Asia and elsewhere in the past decade.

Let alone the meaning of the term, the extent of poverty you speak of is beyond comprehension. No one can reasonably contemplate a number like 80 million. This thought is mind numbing. It is a system/country that is broken.
