A CPU powerful enough for software decode is more expensive than a decode ASIC. If your device requires such a CPU for other reasons, however, s/w decode is "free". DSS boxes and DVD players don't need a powerful CPU so h/w is more cost effective. On the other hand, new PCs have fast CPUs so s/w is the obvious choice. OpenCable settops with their requirements for HTML, Java, etc. might be better served by a single programmable chip which does everything. Or maybe not. Only time will tell.
