FORE Systems' ESX-4800 Verified as Fastest Multi-Gigabit Routing Switch
Ever Tested by Strategic Networks

ESX-4800 Tests at 38 Million Packets Per Second

ATLANTA, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- NetWorld+Interop Booth #5537 -- FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE - news), a leading global supplier of multiservice
networking solutions, announced today that the new ESX(TM)-4800 multi-Gigabit routing switch was determined to be the fastest switch ever tested by Strategic
Networks Consulting, Inc., Needham, Massachusetts, a leading network consultancy firm.

In a series of benchmark tests conducted by Strategic Networks, in conjunction with the ZD Testing and Analysis Group, at Netcom Systems' SmartLab, the
ESX-4800 demonstrated its Application Aware(TM) capabilities, yielding superior switching, routing, and multicast results. The ESX-4800 also surpasses
performance claims for switches made by other leading switch manufacturers, by routing more than 38 million packets per second (Mpps) of 64 byte IP packets
under a fully meshed configuration.

In other benchmark tests related to packet classification and multicast performance, the ESX-4800 successfully classified up to 68.5 Mpps and handled multiple
wire-speed multicast streams without packet loss. All tests were conducted using Netcom Systems' Gigabit and Fast Ethernet SmartBits test equipment at the
Netcom Systems SmartLab. A full report and results of these tests can be viewed at www.snci.com.

While there are a number of switches touting good IP routing performance numbers, the ESX-4800 offers superior packet processing technology to handle gigabit
rate packet classification and gigabit rate multicast. ''These features are extremely critical for deploying multiservice, policy-powered networks,'' said Neil Viljoen,
vice president of product marketing for FORE Systems.

FORE's new ESX line of integrated network services switches, announced yesterday, provides the first platforms to utilize innovative Application Aware technology,
enabling a network to recognize the type of traffic flowing across it, empowering network managers to prioritize specific types of traffic over others.

FORE's new generation of policy-driven, Application Aware switching platforms are based on Windows NT and advanced, stateful Application Aware ASICs.
''Windows NT Server opens up new opportunities for communications vendors,'' said Jawad Khaki, general manager for Windows networking and
communications at Microsoft Corp. ''We're impressed by the performance demonstrated by FORE's new routing switches as it illustrates the scalable solutions that
Windows NT Server enables.''

Embedding Windows NT directly into the switching platform lets FORE provide an integrated set of network services to control the network infrastructure and
address the demands of network-centric applications. By employing an industry-standard network operating system, FORE can partner with best-in-class
independent vendors and pursue a value-sharing business model that ensures continuous innovation and investment protection for customers.
