stak,

Re: NSM/Cyrix and IDT

Nope, I haven't seen any IDT machines in retail stores. As far as forgetting these two companies, I think as an Intel investor, they are all but forgotten. AMD, however, should be more alert regarding these companies since they are AMD's real competitors. After all, these companies (including AMD) are competing against each other for the measured crumbs which Intel leaves behind.

<I understand it in the context of having to build marketing share.;-)>

Anyone can "build marketing share" if they are willing to sell products at a loss. Do you think this is some secret formula for great success that Jerry and AMD have recently stumbled across? This strategy can be used temporarily to enter into markets and gain share if you have very very deep pockets. Unfortunately, AMD doesn't have deep pockets and they have been using this strategy quite some time.

<Bottom line, that was billions out of Intel's pocket.>

Actually, probably only a few hundred million dollars which for Intel is a relatively small. The difference is that Intel can afford a few hundred million less but AMD can't. In fact for AMD, a few hundred cents of profit is relatively large and more than they have earned in 4 of the last 5 quarters.

The real bottom line is the "bottom line"......and on the bottom line, Intel continues to be a cash generating machine while AMD continues to stumble.

<'99'll be another interesting year for both companies.>

I agree. It will especially be interesting to see how many more billions of dollars Intel can rack up in profits and it will be interesting to see if AMD will have to be bailed out and who might come to their rescue.
