Chinese OEM manufacturers are expected to produce over 100,000 DVD players by year end through deal with LSI Logic and its partner Sanyo, with machines expected to retail for about $200. Despite support of China's national government for a Super VCD (SVD) format (see Battle for China's new VCD format intensifies under Technical Developments), DVD has received support of provincial government in Sichuan, which is reported to be investing tens of millions of dollars' in development of the technology by local manufacturers. LSI Logic (USA; +1/408 433 8000; www.lsilogic.com) predicts that by 2000 market for DVD in China will exceed that for VCD.

Singapore-based consumer electronics producer Thakral Corporation is to invest $25m in setting up a DVD software distribution business in mainland China. Warner Bros has already signed with Thakral (www.thakraltech.com.sg) to distribute minimum of 30 titles a year, and has secured rights to around 232 films from Hong Kong and US. Company aims to release 300 titles a year, expected to generate revenues of around $200m--or 20 per cent of its total revenue--by 2000. Thakral has Video CD (VCD) hardware production facilities in Hong Kong and China which are being expanded to meet growing demands for both VCD and DVD players.

What proportion of VCD market will be accounted for by new formats currently under development is also subject for debate. Chip manufacturer C-Cube Microsystems does not anticipate sales of its China VCD (CVD) players will exceed 10 per cent of total VCD market in 1998, rising to perhaps 20-30 per cent in 1999. However, its OEM partner Idall believes CVD players will generate one-third of all VCD player sales this year.
