Tanisys Technology to Supply Build-to-Order Memory Modules to Hitachi Semiconductor
PR Newswire - October 21, 1998 12:12

AUSTIN, Texas, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Tanisys Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: TNSU), a leading supplier of build-to-order custom products for PC manufacturers, today announced an agreement to supply Hitachi Semiconductor (America) Inc. with quick-turn design, manufacturing, testing and distribution of memory modules for Hitachi's OEM customers.

The agreement makes Hitachi the fifth major manufacturer to sign up for Tanisys' C.L.A.S.S. (Comprehensive Logistics and Supply Solutions) build-to- order (BTO) program in the past year. This provides Hitachi with the ability to deliver memory modules on a build-to-order basis, meeting the demands of PC manufacturers for a just-in-time solution to PC assembly. The BTO approach reaps the benefit of increased inventory turns and lower costs.

Tanisys's short cycle design, manufacturing and supply logistic services will be coordinated through an Electronic Data Interchange message system that will make it possible to respond quickly to orders from Hitachi's OEM customers. North American customers will be serviced from Tanisys's plant in Austin, Texas. Orders from European customers will be fulfilled at Tanisys's manufacturing facility in Scotland.

"Hitachi is the fourth largest memory manufacturer in the world, and its size and reputation make this a particularly important win for us," said Chuck Comiso, Chief Executive Officer and President of Tanisys. "We are ramping our capabilities today to provide Hitachi memory modules and are ready to begin shipping immediately to leading PC manufacturers. The fact that Hitachi selected our program is a strong endorsement of the quality of our product and the reliability of our service, including the DarkHorse SIGMA-3 memory testers we use to test the finished modules. As a result, we expect this agreement not only to substantially increase our production volume but also to help solidify our position in the build-to-order market.

"Major personal computer suppliers are a key customer set for our memory operations, and Tanisys is already approved as a supplier by many of the largest PC brands," said Jim Sogas, Director of Memory Marketing for Hitachi America. "Hitachi expects Tanisys to be a key partner as we engage with the industry's top computer hardware manufacturers."
