The smelting is just an additional refinement step to preferentially concentrate the goodies while leaving the inerts and metals that could screw up the resin absorption phase (Fe etc.). That's where the GPGI process is different than the Maxam process that doesn't smelt. The reason may be because of the primary recovery focus, GPGI it's PGMs, Maxam it's gold.
