<<Economic Crisis, Currency Rates
Damages 3M's Core Earnings
Dow Jones Newswires

Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. reported a huge drop in third-quarter earnings, reflecting a restructuring charge and a year-ago gain from the sale of a unit. Excluding items, per-share earnings declined 5.8%, hurt by the global economic crisis and unfavorable currency rates.

The news sent shares of the 3M sharply lower. In midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, 3M lost $4.25 to $80.125.

The maker of consumer products, drugs and telecommunications equipment posted net income of $178 million, or 44 cents a diluted share, compared with a profit of $927 million, or $2.21 a diluted share, a year earlier.

However, the latest quarter included a $332 million pretax restructuring charge. Without the charge, 3M would have earned 97 cents a share, a penny below estimates generated by First Call. Last year's profit would have totaled $432 million, or $1.03 a share, excluding a gain of $495 million from the sale of 3M's National Advertising Co. unit>>
