Dave

you may want to consider Maxtor rather than IBM.

IBM seemed to be the reliability consensus leader even though performance is not quite that of Matrox especially in NT. I think its a reliability history vs performance call. Storage Review's commentary
on the Deskstars, especially in the heat department, where more favorable than for the new 16 GPs. I think the older Deskstars are better value buys than the 16GPs. Am I being too defensive here?

I wouldn't worry about hurrying to get the SL2W8. I can't imagine you will
notice ANY performance difference between it and the significantly cheaper
celeron 300a,

The SL2W8 is going for $265 and is reconned to be an Intel underclocked Pii450 thus overclocking it is not really an overclock but merely going back to its original Intel spec of 450MHZ @ 100Mhz FSB. No voltage tweaks are required and surveys are showing 100% success at 450 vs c300a at 80%. Thats the hub-bub on all BBS, at least. It appears to be bonified special situation. I posted last nite, here but no discussion took place, to my disappointment. I can supply links if anyone is interested.

No games and I agree about the full tower. Trying to find a resonably priced FT with good potential for PS upgrade? and cooling fan placements.

Thanks for your always well thought out comments, Dave....I hope you can comment again on the above.

Clarence

IBM or Maxtor? IMHO you shouldn't be worried about going with Maxtor. They make a great product. I have many of both products, IBM Deskstars and Maxtor 2500 & 2880 series, installed. I use the Maxtor 10 gig 2500 at home. I have noticed that the Maxtors seem to run a bit cooler than the IBMs. Storagereview.com and others seem to bounce back and forth as to who is quicker, but we are talking about raw numbers on a benchmark here. In actual day to day usage I doubt anyone could tell which drive a particular machine is using by working at the desktop (assuming current models and technology) Go with whatever is less expensive, usually the Maxtors.

Good Luck
Dan
