.425G is 425 Megabytes (not Kilobytes). Also, a couple months ago I purchased a 5.2G WD hard disk from CompUSA for approximately $225. Or did I misinterpret what you wrote?

Best,
Mark Halverson

Carey,

<<This assumes the drives are reliable and guaranteed, which is a safe assumption for a WDC product.>>

I think you need to rethink this. You are addressing investors that just got blind sighted by a $77 MILLION increase to WD's warranty reserve.

<<O.K., Fiberman I will try to explain the 4.3G(igabyte) platform to the best of my ability.
Using the 4.3G platform, 4.3G is the amount of storage WDC can store on a single side of the platter. >>

First of all areal density doesn't make a "platform" bu industry gibberish is confusing I know. But you better check in to your figures here. Its per disk, not surface.

<<My son's 486 handdown computer has .425G or 425K(ilobytes) of storage--that smaller amount is enough for all the kids software, games, homework, etc.>>

This is a common mistake in my opinion. Give the kids the hand me downs for data rich games, muti media encyclopedias, etc. While the parents take the big gun to store recipes and chat on AOL. Actually "kids" software is, or at least should be, some of the most storage hungry apps out there.

<<Even though the 4.3G platform may be too much of a good thing, users will buy 4.3G platform HDDs in the resale market, if the price is reasonable, say under $300. >>

I think you have some catching up to do.

Best,
Stitch

<Even though the 4.3G platform may be too much of a good thing, users will buy 4.3G platform HDDs in the resale market, if the price is reasonable, say under $300. Also, OEMs will place competitively priced 4.3G platform HDDs in new computers.>

4.3 gig pricing via Price Watch pricewatch.com show prices starting from $108 for WD's Caviar 4.3GB Ultra Eide HD 3.5LP 5400RPM.

Other noteable prices; Maxtor's 8.4GB UDMA $188 and 13.6GB UDMA $269.

I guess this is far less than $300. Maybe you should upgrade your son's computer. But then, your son's computer is probably worth less than $100, so you might as well buy a used computer from the paper. Here the prices are really amazing.

Regards,

Mark
