<<<Ancor, a leading Fibre Channel switch provider, and VERITAS Software, the leading provider of end-to-end storage
management software solutions, will demonstrate the capability to switch storage data at gigabit speeds directly between
Compaq servers and ATL tape drives. This capability speeds data backup by eliminating the need to move data through the
server, across the local area network (LAN) and back through the server to get to the tape. >>>

The news between Ancor and Veritas may be old. The above detail is significant. This is what Kurt was alluding to on a true SAN environment. Traffic goes directly between disk(s) to tape(s), eliminating the server in between. However, I think the server still has to be used for starting, check pointing, stoping, etc. But big bulk of the traffic are offloaded, releasing the server and the LAN to do something else. It will be an eye opener for IT managers.
