John, Because the lemmings, as you put it, do panic and sell on any negative rumor they unwittingly and unnecessarily affect the price of a good stock...For that reason analysts like Kumar know, or should know, that ambiguous negative remarks they make will have heavily negative effect on gullible investors...The problem there is that it artificially delays the natural progression of a good stock.. This negatively affects the "strong hands" holding Dell for the long run...

IT slow down-Painting the picture with a broad brush.

John:

Of course to exercise caution is warranted but let us look at some facts.

Last 2-3 years we already had a tremendous decline in demand in certain industries, for example the chip guys, the disk guys, the equip guys and next year we may have slow down in some others but it could very well be industry specific as was the case in the past. These pundits can come out and make a generalized comments about a slow down in IT spending but what is that mean? What do they call what happened to the aforementioned segment? Next year it may be someone else's turn (doesn't look like the PC guys will be one of them) but it sure won't be affecting everybody across the board.

As far as next year,it is the year of the great Y2K fiasco and many are of the opinion that there will be a surge in the prospects of Y2K related companies and computer makers as many will opt to change their systems instead of trying to fix the antiquated codes and this what Mr.Dell thinks and he said he is already starting to see a pick up in this segment form small and medium size companies and he expects many large corporations to follow suit.

Pundits can come out and make generalized comments about a slow down in 1999 and that is not saying much if you ask me but my point is we already experienced a tremendous slow down in certain industries and we may very well experience another slow down next year for others in the biz but it sure won't be across the board and that is all I am saying.

What gets me about the gurus is that they can say whatever they want today and they can change their tune the next day as they are not accountable for anything and they may say things to benefit them and not the 'small' investors like us.So it is to our benefit to do our own research into these matters rather than listening to these 'hype-masters' whose only interest is to their masters and their pocket book.It is also important to note that 99% of the times these guys are wrong but I have to admit these guys can move the markets and if is one is a short term investor and or trader it could seriously damage their portfolio.
