Nice start on the day. :) Regards, Mark General Scanning Receives Notice of Court Action PR Newswire, Wednesday, October 21, 1998 at 18:17 WATERTOWN, Mass., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- General Scanning Inc. (NASDAQ:GSCN) today announced that an action has been filed in United States District Court for the Northern District of California by Electro Scientific Industries, Inc. ("ESI", NASDAQ:ESIO) alleging infringement of three ESI patents. ESI contends that the patents relate to the use of 1.3 micron wavelength laser-based film and device trimming. General Scanning and Electro Scientific Industries are presently engaged in a lawsuit in the same Federal District Court relating to the use of 1.3 micron wavelength lasers. General Scanning had anticipated the recent action on the part of ESI and had previously tried to combine the subject matter of this case with the on-going litigation in order to more expeditiously resolve the dispute. General Scanning believes it will prevail in both litigation matters. General Scanning is a licensee under a U.S. patent that covers the use of 1.3 micron wavelength laser technology for laser processing on semiconductor devices that predates all of the ESI patents by ten years. Systems that employ 1.3 micron wavelength lasers represent a narrow segment of the laser processing markets served by General Scanning equipment. To the extent this news release discusses information or expectations about General Scanning's products or markets, or otherwise makes statements about the future, such statements are forward looking and are subject to a number of risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially from the statements made. Such risks include risks that ongoing litigation may be determined in a manner adverse to General Scanning, and other risks detailed in General Scanning's Annual Report on Form 10-K that has been filed with respect to the 1997 fiscal year and the Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q with respect to the fiscal second quarter 1998. General Scanning, headquartered in Watertown, MA, develops and manufactures a broad line of laser systems for a wide range of applications in the electronics, semiconductor, medical, automotive and aircraft industries. In addition, the Company produces a line of laser subsystems and components which are used in the Company's own systems as well as sold to other manufacturers of laser systems. General Scanning also designs and manufactures under ISO 9001 certification a line of thermal printers for leading medical instrument companies.
