The first summer I lived in the Granny's house in the holler, I planted a field of tomatoes, a few hundred tomato plants. By the end of summer, the yard and fields had grown up knee high and the tomatoes were rotten on the vines. It was quite a picture. Eerie from what I'm told. I was alternately known as "the witch of Rocky Holler" and "the drunken witch of Rocky Holler", depending on how nice someone was being, and whether or not they'd seen the empty bottles.

No one but no one braved my door till one fall evening, after dark, I heard a tentative knock and went to peek through the window. There on the doorstep stood two teen-age brothers from down the road. Turned out they were rather desperate for a ride, desperate enough that after much discussion and a bit of arguing they had come to my door. I was so impressed with their bravery that I carried them where they were going and didn't even comment on the shaking muscles that I noticed.
