CyberStar Delivers the Power of Global Broadband Communications to the Desktop
New Digital Distribution Services are Fully Customizable, Modular, Subscription-based, Easy to Install
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1998--Making it easy for IT managers to deliver the speed and efficiency of digital satellite distribution to the corporate desktop, CyberStar L.P., a leading provider of global broadband IP-multicast solutions, today announced the commercial availability of its broadband satellite-based business communication service.

The affordably priced service enables users to reliably transfer large data, audio and video files that had been prohibitively expensive or cumbersome to send using traditional methods. This content can be sent directly to a Windows NT(tm) server or Windows desktop, lowering Internet access and telecommunications costs.

Using the CyberStar service, organizations can transmit interactive training and corporate communications; broadcast scheduled business meetings, announcements and presentations; and distribute catalogs, price lists and software updates to multiple locations virtually anywhere simultaneously. The CyberStar service also enables users to readily update and retrieve applications, create secure IP-multicast sessions and conduct high-speed file transfers; support media streaming; participate in distance learning; and perform database updates and replication to and from a PC. Requiring only a satellite dish, software, a PC adapter card and a SmartCard for a basic solution, the CyberStar service integrates seamlessly into existing corporate networks.

''The future of information delivery is here today,'' said Ronald C. Maehl, president of CyberStar. ''With desktop access to the power of global broadband communications, users will no longer look at the network as a potential bottleneck, but rather as a powerful business tool that greatly enhances their productivity.''

Flexibility, Security, Affordability Built In

CyberStar service uniquely combines satellite-based broadband technology and industry-standard protocols -- including Internet Protocol (IP), HTTP, Digital Video Broadcast (DVB), MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 -- and an affordable, off-the-shelf satellite dish and multicast hardware.

The service enables companies to:

-- Extend current intranets, extranets and virtual private networks
with high bandwidth content

-- Conduct efficient electronic commerce

-- Create personalized channels for the delivery of multimedia
information

-- Provide corporate training and distance learning anywhere in the
world

-- Deliver software updates on demand or to multiple users

-- Support a variety of networked devices, including PCs,
interactive kiosks, set-top boxes or terminals
CyberStar offers corporate users a modular, subscription-based service for implementing their broadband communications solutions. Subscribers can choose their features with the confidence that the system will scale as their business needs grow. The CyberStar service comprises the following packages:

-- Standard Service Connection

-- Content Services

-- High-speed Internet Browsing
CyberStar's standard service connection package includes professional installation of a satellite antenna, a Broadlogic Satellite Express PC-compatible receiver card, conditional access to the service, and the Windows software needed to seamlessly integrate the service into existing corporate networks. Priced at $1,100 for a typical installation in a two-story commercial building, for example, the Standard Service Connection package features a low entry cost and provides immediate access to the CyberStar service.

The Content Service greatly reduces corporate IT management overhead by allowing CyberStar to host, maintain and distribute content automatically. Customers can retrieve content usage statistics and conduct remote administration and diagnostics of content usage through the Internet. The high speed Internet browsing service (which requires the standard connection package) provides a much richer browsing experience by enabling users to connect to the Internet at broadband speeds.

CyberStar's integrated service approach provides the sender secure control over when and where information will be sent, making it ideal for organizations that need to routinely deliver large amounts of materials to multiple locations. Businesses with remote international locations or a large mobile workforce will also benefit from the service's efficiency and low cost relative to the cost of sending materials using traditional media.

''The potential cost and time savings now possible through CyberStar services will be enormous,'' said Maehl. ''For example, one of our customers was spending $15,000 per week distributing video files by overnight delivery to 1,500 locations. By using the CyberStar service, it was able to eliminate time lapses and keep service levels consistent at a fraction of the original cost. These benefits enabled our customer to increase its number of delivery locations to 5,000.''
