Scott, Pat,

My .02 cents on directory services:

On NDS:

Novell Directory Services, though shipping , has never received any signifricant market share. It initially only worked on Netware IPX clients and apps that ran on Netware. Novell has recently discovered that the world is going IP, hence their support for IP and LDAP. (MSFT API that allows different directories to share info).

MSFT's Active Directory is still vapor ware and hasn't yet shipped. HOWEVER, NT owns the lion's share of the application server market. More companies write apps for NT than any other platform (UNIX included) and NT easily outsells netware.

CSCO and MSFT have created an expanded use of directory sharing and synchroniziation via their DEN initiative. CSCO, who supports LDAP in their router software, IOS, can interact with ANY LDAP compliant directory service. However, the data networking leader has joined forces with the Application Server leader, to target a new market of networking integration.

The LU announcement with NDS is purely a defensive move on LU's part with no substance. Who cares if NDS is better than Active directory if no one's using it ? And who cares about LU integrating their data products to NDS when their presence in the data networking field is negligible.

Advantage CSCO/MSFT.
