they slipped this stuff into one of the press releases: - profitable in fiscal third Q 99. AND for the year! - they expect over 75,000 (i did the math myself) VPC units to ship before June! - note that the price range is no longer 5-6K, but 3-4K! i hope they are not setting expectations too high. ========================================== In an interview after the earnings were announced, Silicon Graphics Chief Financial Officer Steve Gomo said he expects to report another loss in the second quarter, but to be profitable in the second half and for the full fiscal year, which ends in June. Silicon Graphics earlier this year cut 10 percent of its work force as part of a broader restructuring aimed at reclaiming lost business. The company, whose computers are used in a range of applications, from special effects design in movies to automobile crash test simulation, has suffered as some competitors developed lower-priced machines that could perform similar functions. from an interview after the earnings announcement - see Yahoo. Part of Silicon Graphics' turnaround strategy is to make cheaper computers that conform to the industry standard. Gomo said the company will begin shipping the cheaper PCs, priced around $3,500 to $4,000 in January. He said a conservative estimate was that these workstations would generate $300 million of sales in fiscal 1999. ============
