GeoCities Posts Less-Than-Expected Loss on Improved Margins Santa Monica, California, Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- GeoCities, which offers free web sites to Internet users, reported a third- quarter loss, though much less than expected, as gross margins and registered members increased. Geocities said it lost $4.1 million, or 14 cents a share, compared with a loss of $2.3 million, or 12 cents, in the year earlier period. The company was expected to lose 24 cents a share, according to the average estimate of three analysts polled by First Call Corp. Revenue more than tripled to $5.3 million from $1.27 million. Santa Monica, California-based Geocities organizes its members' websites into ''communities'' based on shared interests. The company said the number of active registered users who have their own pages now numbers more than 2.5 million. Geocities also said that it averaged 44.8 million page views a day in September, compared with 30.5 million in June. ''The results show that there is real power in the community model,'' said Paul Noglows of Hambrecht & Quist, who is keeping his ''buy'' rating. ''I think this company is in a good position to define what it means to have an individual presence on the Web.'' GeoCities didn't disclose the amount of revenue derived from advertising, but the company said gross margin rose to 58 percent from 30 percent in the second quarter. ''These kinds of trends can and should be expected from the Web-based model,'' said Steven Hansen, the company's chief financial officer, because costs should decrease once the basic infrastructure of the site is established. Marketing expenses at GeoCities more than doubled to $4.41 million from $1.29 million. Hansen said the company spent less than expected on marketing in the third quarter and is planning an ''aggressive advertising campaign'' in November. GeoCities went public at 17 on Aug. 11, shot up to as high as 51 3/8, then declined. Shares today rose 1 3/16 to 22 1/4. GeoCities reported quarterly results after the close of U.S. trading. 19:33:17 10/21/1998 Any redistribution of Bloomberg content, including by framing or similar means, is expressly prohibited without the prior written consent of Bloomberg L.P.
