Sam, I appreciate you historical perspective regarding the Cold War. Although I agree that the Soviets eventually imploded through their own failed policies, it was the leadership here at the time that hastened the decline and brought it to a much quicker conclusion.

If you'll recall, at the time when Reagan was deriding the "Evil Empire," the threat was very real and was taken very seriously. It is easy in hindsight, knowing what we know now, to diminish the significance of the threat. Remember also that the scope of the threat was much larger than the Soviet Union and encompassed worldwide proxy nations. It's easy now to dismiss Cuba, the former East Germany, and others, but that is simply an indication of how far WE have come since neutralizing those former threats, who were actively sowing strife and revolution throughout the world. Or has everyone forgotten about those times already?

I believe that the leadership and their tough (and unpopular amongst the media) policies of engagement made the difference. Both are qualities that I could not conceive of from the current administration under similar circumstances.

That is my point. What will be the next great confrontation that forces us to set aside our differences and deal with a common threat, and is this the leadership that we are confident can handle it on our behalf?

When the game is on the line, these are not the guys I would prefer to have at the plate. They should never have been called up from the Arkansas farm team.

Regards,

JS
