The Left followed Soviet foreign policy and part of that was to excoriate FDR as a "warmonger" when he tried to build support against Hitler and for aiding GB.

Of course that all changed when Hitler turned on Russia - then the Left screamed that FDR was never doing enough to help the Allies and especially Stalin.

If I recall correctly, that was even played out in The Way We Were. Perhaps the "cheers" man can understand it on that level.

My father had the same, I believe, unenlightened view regarding homosexuals until a few out gays started working closely with him at his hospital. Once he got to know them on a one-to-one basis, he completely changed his views on homosexuality. He stopped viewing it as a psychological disease, as he was taught in medical school. That was in his late 50s. So it's not too late for you either, joan. :-)
