Pigboy,

Read that post. Very convoluted. It'll be interesting to see Bucky's response. However this is an area that Bucky and I discussed at length a few months back. There is a general belief that over the long term evolution of networks that we'll be moving to IP over WDM. In the meantime ATM switches, both at the edge (although not so much anymore) and at the core are neccessary since IP over WDM isn't fully "baked" yet and certainly hasn't the following that ATM has.

The poster mentioned something about intelligence moving to edge of the network into ATM edge switches., this is partially correct. Intelligence is moving to the edge - but into routers and switch/routers. ATM is moving more to the core and this is where ASND dominates today. Now, if IP over WDM becomes real, then the ATM core switches would no longer be reqiured (except for support of ATM enterprise nets) and then ASND could be left out. However ASND understands these issues and is placing additional intelligence into their switches - in effect moving to a switch/router model - eventually. So, convergence around the switch/router over WDM is probably where we end up...at least for the short term (5-15 year) future.
