stak,

<Does Celeron come storming back?>

I think based on Intel's Q3 earnings and their CC, that this has already happened. However, most of the storming was probably toward the end of the quarter. It will be interesting to see how this will affect AMD in Q4 when it has a full quarter's impact.

Re: Dwelling in the past

The past is by no means a perfect predictor of the future but it does give us some insight, especially when managements, philosophies, and strategies remain largely unchanged.

Re: Importance of products

I have always said that AMD had respectable products (especially given their resources) and that AMD engineers are to be commended. AMD has been an excellent example, though, that product alone doesn't mean success. My motto for years has been "there is a big difference between making and marketing/selling a product". It is AMD's management and strategy that has caused the company to stagnate over the past decade. Properly managed, I believe AMD could have been relatively successful. As long as Jerry and his boys are running the show, however, I believe that AMD will underperform.

Stak, Re: "What does your crystal ball tell you for the 4th qtr. and 1st qtr. of '99? Does
Celeron come storming back?"

Does Celeron come storming back? Do you mean continue to come storming back? In the conference call, Intel said the new Celerons, now with 128KB on chip L2 caches, are selling at four times the rate of the original Celerons. I'd say that's stormin', Norman. About 4Q98, again from the conference call, Intel said there was strong momentum of sales "spilling over" from the end of 3Q98. I am guessing that 4Q is in the bag. For 1Q99, or any part of 1999, Intel declined to comment, as I interpreted the conference call. I think that was the major reason the world didn't jump all over the stock, what with a very strong 3Q98 and prospects for same for 4Q98.
