Eric,

I am not dismissing it, I have my opinions why Dell is migrating. So I'll tell you.

Dell likely had to appease the MSFT God in order to ensure they continue to receive the best OEM pricing point on Win98 licensing for their PCs that they roll out. Maybe Dell was even offered a couple less points on the price per unit if they made the migration.

It was not because of internal cost savings and administration savings. Most IT shops which have a strong NetWare platform and emerging NT platform have realized that simply upgrading and consolidating their current servers to Y2K compliant servers and integrating NT servers into the NDS tree will provide them with a best TCO reductions and eased administration.

Many of the servers Dell mentioned required simple and free patch upgrades.

This announcement from Dell and MSFT was clearly political - no bones about it.
