"Am I glad I didn't get Datek. I was so-ooo close to open an account - to get at screaming dead meat like KTEL and ENMD"

Interesting examples. Some think that KTEL is what drew the attention of regulators and caused Datek to have to start actually having shares to borrow when you short. This theory assumes that Datek had problems with the regulators and let naked short orders execute. I have no firsthand knowledge that this happened.

KTEL was the first stock that Datek refused to lend, of which I was aware. Interestingly enough, they quit lending it on 5/5/98, which was the same day KTEL put in it's high.

Datek made ENMD non marginable the day it gapped to 83. Unless you were able and willing to get a short off at the open you weren't able to short it through Datek, at least back then. Apparently, it is marginable, but has the NS (no shorting) indication now.
