Not Really Corel Related.

As with many old timers from the WordPerfect side, I took somewhat of a pay cut moving to a new company. However, I am really enjoying my new work so far. I am working for a very large firm in a consulting wing of the company. Each of the offices that do my work in this region are certified CMM/SEI level 2 organizations. Ours is a new office and we are working on the certification. This company actually cares about project planning, being able to learn from previous experiences and being able to properly project the time and money needed to produce a set of results. It has been great beginning to learn the things that are necessary to run a world class organization.

I am still working in the Java arena. It is great to be able to see a company that is using the language to solve problems that Java is suited for. Working for a company where we get paid to solve specific problems and picking the proper technology to do it is a lot nicer than what I did for the last three years at Corel.

I miss my friends and WordPerfect and feel bad that the product is probably dead. I would like to see Corel succeed as well. I figured that when Corel purchased us we had a chance. I didn't know the company, and I figured that since the company was public and had created a successful product in the same marketplace that WordPerfect played in they knew what they were doing. Unfortunately, I soon learned that having a small group of dominant people who were out of their league running things at WP was small potatoes compared to the havoc a Mike was putting Corel through.

Oh Well. My current company has it's problems, but it also has 50 Billion dollars in committed contracts over the next 10 years. The people I have met in more senior management know what they are doing running a large company and that can make all the difference in the world.
