U.S. Congress okays bill to lift sanctions
The U.S. Congress has approved legislation empowering the President, Mr. Bill Clinton, to relax economic sanctions against India and Pakistan imposed in the wake of the May nuclear tests conducted by the two countries. Under the legislation passed on Tuesday, the U.S. administration has now been granted the authority to waive sanctions against India and Pakistan for a year excluding those relating to military use and technology and dual-use items.
