To Walter Jacquemin:Thanks for the link to Ericsson 9 month cumulative earnings report. (For those of you interested, that should be just before this post - or not too far back at least :-) ) Much appreciate your getting it here. Now the trick is to use the link and then scroll down (almost forever) to near the end where there is some selected data on July to Sept 1998. Most of that data is ugly. A few bright spots - such as Asia (China) etc. but handset sales down for example and on and on. Strongly recommend to those of you interested in how Ericy's business is doing - as opposed to its monkey business re patents, WCDMA et al. Wish I knew how to copy the relevant tables here - but I don't. Maybe someone more adapt than I (a large number here I would guess) would be willing to copy and paste to this Q thread for those here who follow Ericy (as a defensive measure if nothing else) to read and comment on. Chaz

+++++ ot Nokia Reports Surging Sales, Profit

By MATTI HUUHTANEN Associated Press Writer

HELSINKI, Finland (AP) _ Nokia's cellular phone sales nearly doubled in the third quarter, helping to fuel a 75-percent
increase in pretax profit for the first nine months of the year, to 9.6 billion markkaa ($1.9 billion).

Net sales for all Nokia's divisions jumped to 53.3 billion markkaa compared with 36.7 billion markkaa for the
January-September period last year.

During the third quarter, sales of mobile phones surged to 12.9 billion markkaa from 6.6 billion markkaa in 1997, and for the
nine-month period were up to 31.9 billion markkaa from 20 billion markkaa last year.

Nokia's profit was 1 billion markkaa higher than market analysts had predicted, and the group's president Jorma Ollila said the
results had surpassed the company's own expectations.

''We now feel confident in declaring that we have significantly increased our market share in mobile phones to become the
largest manufacturer of mobile phones worldwide,'' Ollila said.

Last year, Nokia sold 21 million cellular hand sets, making it the world's second largest mobile phone maker after Motorola
Inc. (MOT - news), based in Schaumburg, Illinois.

Ollila said preliminary market data indicate Nokia has now overtaken Motorola.

Nokia's good result was mainly due to ''lower than anticipated price erosion in mobile phones, and rapid digitalization in the
Americas,'' Ollila said.

He said the company expected strong growth to continue for the rest of the year in China, Europe and in its main market, the
United States, and predicted a good overall result for the year.

Nokia is a world leader in digital mobile phone technology, and has supplied GSM equipment to 67 operators in 35 countries.
It has sales in 130 countries, and employs 42,000 people.
