What is interesting, however, is that movies and TV documentaries are now helping to fill the gap

I taped the PBS series on the Civil War, it was an incredible work. BTW, there was also a documentary on the holocaust on PBS years ago called "Shoah". I don't believe Schindler's List (while excellent) compares to this film.
